Inserting Mother of Pearl or Abalone shell into the surface of an object (Wood in this case) is called an inlay. In old days this was done all by hand, nowadays we use a laser cutter to cut and engrave our wood and hand inlay the pieces.

This case is great my only gripe is that it didn't fit on my phone with my camera screen protector, so I had to carve out the plastic that goes between the camera.

I'm giving this case 3 stars only because the quality of the wood is cheaper than I expected (I have the sun/moon case in an older edition, and the wood was better quality). Also, the edges around the screen are really thin, and don't provide much protection. Again my old case had a thicker edge. Would only recommend if you don't care about those things.
